Mission and Main Activities

Following are the 10 main activities (in two main categories) of HKAECF in support of its mission which is to contribute to the fostering, promoting and facilitating of economic cooperation between Hong Kong and the 10 member countries of ASEAN (“1+10”), and between the ASEAN region and the PRC (“10+1”) with Hong Kong serving as a high value-adding and facilitating key international hub, bridge, connector, promotor and investor.

 

1. International networking and exchange events/activities - people-to-people diplomacy

 

(a)   Participation in and where appropriate support for various ASEAN-related conferences and events organized by the Government of the HKSAR Trade Industry Department, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (ASEAN), InvestHK, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), major business associations such as the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC), the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC), the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA), the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), the Hong Kong - Thailand Business Council and the Hong Kong - Vietnam Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong-Malaysia Business Association (HKMBA) and leading ASEAN-focused institutions of the PRC, held in Hong Kong, the Mainland or overseas

 

(b)  Participation in and where appropriate support for various events/activities organized by the consulates of member countries of ASEAN held in Hong Kong

 

(c)   Participation in and where appropriate support for various ASEAN-related investment or business conferences or exhibitions organized by major international commercial and investment banks, investment funds (including sovereign funds and endowment funds), insurance and trust companies, consulting firms, business schools, law firms, law schools, accounting firms, media groups and global/regional development agencies such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) etc., held in Hong Kong, the Mainland or overseas

 

(d)   Organization of periodic meetings in Hong Kong for members to meet and to get to know various visiting business and community leaders from member countries of ASEAN for more economic cooperation opportunities for Hong Kong overall

 

(e)  Organization of one or more annual delegations of members to visit one or more member countries of ASEAN or the PRC to meet with and to get to know various ASEAN-focused business and community leaders and organizations there for more economic cooperation opportunities for Hong Kong overall

 

(f)  Development and when appropriate launching of an annual " Hong Kong-ASEAN Distinguished Leader" honourary award scheme to recognize appropriate distinguished business or community leaders for their significant contributions to and/or positive impact on fostering, promoting and facilitating economic cooperation between Hong Kong and member countries of ASEAN, and between the PRC and the ASEAN region with Hong Kong serving as a value-adding and facilitating key international hub, bridge and connector.  

 

2. Promotion and facilitation of the carrying out and the sharing of results of ASEAN-related research - economic cooperation opportunities identification and constructive policy advocacy

 

(a) Development and maintenance of a network of contacts with various leading ASEAN-related research organizations, universities, policy think tanks, international forums, NGOs and experts in Hong and overseas such as Boao Forum for Asia, Forbes Global CEO Conference, the China-ASEAN Business Council, the US-ASEAN Business Council, the Peking University National School of Development, the Tsinghua University School of Public Administration, Fudan University, the Qianhai Institute for Innovation Research, Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre, Hong Kong Strategy, Fung Global Institute (FGI), Grand View think tank, Pangoal Institution, Finance Center for South-South Cooperation (FCSSC), the National University of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Chulalongkorn University, Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM), the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI), the London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asian Centre, the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), King's College London (KCL), University of Ottawa, Carleton University, the University of Hong Kong, HKU SPACE, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lingnan University, The Open University of Hong Kong and Hang Seng Management College etc.

 

(b)  Participation in, facilitation of, and where appropriate support for appropriate ASEAN-related research or ASEAN-related economic policy or investment or business conferences or exhibitions (that may benefit Hong Kong overall) held in Hong Kong, the Mainland or overseas, including organizing “HK-ASEAN Expert Forum” in Hong Kong periodically to help to increase the Hong Kong community’s overall knowledge of and connections with the ASEAN region

 

(c)  Facilitation of and where appropriate support for the carrying out and/or dissemination of results of various appropriate ASEAN-related research projects/initiatives (that may benefit Hong Kong overall) managed in Hong Kong, the Mainland or overseas, two supporting “think tank” capacity building initiatives being: (i) organizing a “Panel of HK-ASEAN Experts” comprising all “HK-ASEAN Expert Forum” keynote speakers and top-calibre talents covering various relevant industries and functional areas, and (ii) establishing a scheme of honourary appointments for leading ASEAN-knowledgeable academics to be appointed as “HK-ASEAN Senior Fellows” who can add to HKAECF’s policy advocacy work

 

(d)  When and where appropriate participation in ASEAN-related government policy consultation exercises by providing appropriate ideas, questions or recommendations (that may benefit Hong Kong overall) in a constructive manner
